KBFA general advisor Andrew Bennett led a session on how electric fences work and the many options available, followed by a Q&A where participants discussed their specific needs.
Electric fencing has proven to be an effective and inexpensive solution for various farm challenges, from protecting chickens and compost from critters to keeping elk out of hay fields. While electric fences can even function well in winter, proper setup and careful management are essential for success.
Drawing on years of personal experience and, more importantly, the decades of farmers’ wisdom he has gathered as an advisor, Andrew covered the pros and cons of physical, electric, and hybrid fencing, as well as some of the common pitfalls that can cause fences to fail.
He outlined the key principles behind a reliable electric fence, including animal psychology, strategic placement of fences and gates, solar versus plug-in fencers, proper installation and testing of ground rods, and simple monitoring techniques to ensure fence maintenance becomes a habit rather than a chore.
Additionally, Andrew provided insight into funding opportunities for farm fencing projects and explained how farmers could apply for financial support.
