Field Day: Small Scale Local Meat & Rotational Grazing

Eric and Kali Martin of Dutchman Legacy Farm had been raising grass-fed and -finished local beef and lamb for a decade on their 50-acre family farm in Procter. They used rotational grazing to maximize their pasture and forage production, with a strong focus on soil and plant health. With a farmgate licence, their farm served as a great example of what it takes to operate a small-scale, sustainable local meat business.
Eric had been working with Grazing Mentor Greg Tegart on a grazing plan to maximize his forage productivity. At the field day, participants heard from Eric and Greg about key considerations for setting up a rotational grazing plan, forage quality, livestock nutrition, and more.
Greg Tegart is a Grazing Mentor with BC Forage Council and a Range and Field Crop Agrologist. Greg has enjoyed numerous roles in agriculture including field crop and range specialist and district agrologist. He has led or participated in numerous projects and initiatives that allowed him to work throughout BC. Greg lives in rural Coldstream BC.
