Drones and Images with Devin Chursinoff & Industry Professionals

Join us for a discussion of drones for use in agriculture with ranchers, researchers and industry experts. Boundary cattle rancher Devin Chursinoff and KBFA advisor Andrew Bennet will describe their experience with drones and free satellite data to map farms and vegetation quality.
John Church, researcher from Thompson Rivers University will present his work on the use of drones on cattle ranches to improve herd management, saving time and money. Chris Noske is a horticulturist and entrepreneur whose Langley-based company ProAg is the only organization in BC licensed to sell and operate huge drones to spray foliar amendments.Roundtable discussion and brainstorming is encouraged after the presentation!

Forage production will be the focus of the discussions, however, the basic principles of nutrient balancing for crop productivity will be relevant to anyone who is looking maximize crop production and understand soil and plant interactions.​

Join Hermann Bruns of Wild Flight Farm on a virtual tour of their greenhouse to learn their seed starting techniques, efficiencies, space management and timing for specific crops. We will also view their outdoor season extension areas where crops planted in the fall are ready for harvest now.
 
 
Soil Club Sampling: Mapping and Collection

Join soil scientist, Bill Chapman, for two days of collecting soil samples and an event to review results. Soil Club is a ongoing initiative with Kootenay and Boundary market gardeners to investigate soil management practices and share experiences for nutrient management. On April 7 & 14, join commercial market gardeners at two local farms to map and and strategize soil sample collection and collect samples for lab analysis. In-field discussions will focus on how to develop a farm-level soil sample collection strategy and variability in local agricultural soils.

Save the date(s) to join irrigation specialists Bruce Naka and Andrew Bennett to discuss ways to save money and optimize irrigation on your farm. This series is based on examples from the Kootenay and Boundary region from the project “On-Farm Water Conservation” to develop resources to support producers to optimize irrigation and conserve water on their farm.
 
Field Day: Grazing Management & Soils with Norm Ward

Norm Ward is the owner of Range Ward, Innovative Tools & Solutions used in the Management of Regenerative Ecosystems. His company’s products include mobile electric fencing units used for grazing management including the Power Grazer and Razer Grazer. At this field day Norm will discuss his approach to holistic and regenerative management of soils and using grazing systems as a tool to build soil health.
 
Field Day: Fencing Systems with Little Fork Ranch

Building affordable and resilient fencing systems for livestock is a necessary investment for all producers but it can be challenging to know where to focus your energy and money. At this field day we will hear from three ranchers about different and adaptable fencing systems (including electric and permanent) who have tried and true lessons about where your energy and dollars should be invested.
