Past Event: Small Machines for Market Gardening

September 15, 2024: First Light Farm, Revelstoke

First Light Farm has been researching and trialing how field operations can be mechanized with small equipment and they have an impressive collection of small equipment that they integrate into their daily operations to control weeds and reduce labour. At this field day participants learned best practices from farm owners Jesse and Chris who shared their knowledge and demonstrated the tools in action! The tools require careful bed planning so that the row spacing fits the implements for the job, but careful planning in advance can save hours of weed control with the help of mechanization. Soil type should also be considered before jumping into equipment purchases as coarse textured, rocky soil may not be suited for things like finger and basket weeders.
